Elderslie Archives
Elderslie has one of the most comprehensive estate archives of its type and is an invaluable management tool. Virtually every estate record of any significance is maintained in its purpose built archive, from 17th and 18th century documents in Latin on vellum (traditionally pig skin); 19th rent books and photographs to 20th century daybook files and estate chartularies. Of interest to and accessed by both professional and amateur historians, the collection is of special interest to those of Scots descent overseas seeking to trace their forebears in the locality.
Following a three year programme of re-cataloguing, the archive database is now available on-line here. There are also links from the National Library of Scotland where some of the more important estate documents are on permanent loan, so that those searching the national archive can access material at Houston.
The on line catalogue will show if we have specific documents, but it won’t actually bring up the documents themselves, if you want to see the documents a visit to the archive, held in the Estate office, should be arranged. The service is free to amateur researchers unless the services of our archivist are required. For commercial research a fee may be required.
To make an appointment please contact the Estate office on 01505 612124 or email Jane Mill-Irving jane@elderslieestates.co.uk
